雷電木は特定の木を指す名前ではなくナナカマド、チャンチン、キササゲ、ナンジャモンジャの総称です。
雷を受けやすい木、受ける役割を果たす木とされており、生木は燃えにくいことから「火除けの木」や「落雷除けの木」として縁起のいい木とされています。
西洋でも古来より「魔除けの木」として扱われており、様々な神話や物語に登場しています。
